Lanterns Finally Showed Hal Jordan Using The Ring — And DC Fans Immediately Relaxed
The reaction to HBO’s Lanterns shifted almost instantly after the newest teaser dropped. The first footage from the series focused heavily on mystery, small-town tension, and detective-style atmosphere, which honestly confused a lot of Green Lantern fans. People kept asking the same question: where were the actual Green Lantern powers?
Now audiences finally got a real look at Hal Jordan using the ring — glowing constructs, energy blasts, and the classic green aura included — and suddenly the tone around the show online feels much less skeptical.
What stood out immediately is that the powers don’t look cartoonishly oversized the way some fans feared. HBO seems to be treating the ring abilities more like dangerous tools than giant CGI fireworks. The energy constructs look heavy and physical instead of floating weightlessly across the screen. It gives the footage a more grounded science-fiction feel, which actually fits the darker atmosphere the series seems to be aiming for.
The Show Takes Place In 2016 — And That Changes A Lot
One of the more surprising details confirmed by showrunner Chris Mundy is that part of Lanterns takes place in 2016, years before the main timeline of James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
That explains why the show feels more isolated than people expected.
Instead of immediately throwing audiences into giant intergalactic wars or Justice League-level crossover storytelling, Lanterns sounds much more interested in the relationship between Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to early details, Hal is already a veteran Lantern while John is still learning how terrifying the responsibility actually is.
And honestly, that setup feels smarter than rushing directly into “save the universe” storytelling again. DC has spent years trying to go bigger before audiences even connected emotionally with the characters first.

Sinestro Might Be More Important Than DC Is Admitting
Another major reveal is that Sinestro plays a significant role in the story’s background even though other Green Lanterns reportedly won’t appear much during the first season.
That detail probably matters more than casual viewers realize. The emotional collapse between Hal Jordan and Sinestro has always been one of the strongest parts of Green Lantern mythology because it’s not really about cosmic battles — it’s about mentorship, disappointment, and ideology breaking apart over time.
There’s also something interesting about how restrained the marketing still is. HBO could easily flood every teaser with giant alien worlds and Lantern Corps cameos. Instead, most of the footage still focuses on empty roads, uncomfortable conversations, crime-scene tension, and older Hal Jordan looking exhausted all the time.
At moments, Lanterns honestly feels closer to a crime thriller with cosmic horror elements accidentally leaking into it.
DC Might Finally Be Treating Green Lantern Like Science Fiction Again
That may end up being the smartest creative decision the show makes.
For years, Green Lantern adaptations struggled because studios either treated the mythology like pure comedy or overloaded everything with bright CGI chaos. Lanterns seems more interested in making the universe feel eerie and mysterious again. Even the ring effects look slightly dangerous instead of playful.
The cast includes Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro.
And honestly, the older version of Hal Jordan may end up becoming the show’s biggest strength. Superhero stories rarely let legendary characters look tired anymore. Lanterns does. There’s something slightly sad about this version of Hal already looking like someone carrying years of mistakes before the story even fully starts.
That mood lingers longer than the CGI does. Which is probably a good sign.
