Kit Harington Takes Over as Gilderoy Lockhart After Nicholas Hoult Leaves Harry Potter

Kit Harington and Nicholas Hoult composite for HBO's Harry Potter Season 2

HBO’s new Harry Potter series has made a sudden change to one of its most recognizable Season 2 roles. Kit Harington will now play Gilderoy Lockhart, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who has left the production because of scheduling conflicts.

The switch comes only a couple of weeks after Hoult was announced for the part. HBO has already confirmed Harington as the new Lockhart, with the change coming ahead of Season 2’s production, which is scheduled to begin this fall.

Kit Harington Already Knows Gilderoy Lockhart

For Harington, this isn’t his first time stepping into Lockhart’s world.

The Game of Thrones star previously voiced the character in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, released last year. He also spoke warmly about the role when he joined the audiobook project, describing Lockhart as an especially entertaining character to play.

His previous experience with the character gives the recasting an unusual connection. Harington won’t be approaching Lockhart completely from scratch when he begins filming the HBO series.

Lockhart is one of the central characters in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s series. He arrives at Hogwarts as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, presenting himself as a celebrated wizard with a long list of heroic achievements.

His reputation, however, doesn’t quite match his actual abilities.

Why Nicholas Hoult Left the Series

Hoult’s departure was attributed to scheduling conflicts.

According to reports surrounding the change, HBO’s production schedule shifted in a way that created problems with Hoult’s existing commitments. The actor is also attached to other major projects, including his return as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.

Hoult had only been officially announced as Lockhart earlier in August, making his exit particularly quick. HBO subsequently moved to find another actor for the role rather than delaying the character’s production schedule.

The casting change does not appear to affect the overall plans for the second season.

Season 2 Will Bring Lockhart to Hogwarts

The second season will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, bringing the story to Harry’s second year at Hogwarts.

Lockhart plays a major part in that story. His arrival gives the students a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, but his polished public image gradually falls apart as Harry and his friends discover that the famous wizard isn’t quite the hero he claims to be.

Kenneth Branagh previously played Lockhart in the 2002 movie adaptation of Chamber of Secrets. Harington will now give the character a completely different live-action interpretation.

The New Harry Potter Cast Is Taking Shape

Harington joins a cast that already includes several established names alongside the young actors playing the new generation of Hogwarts students.

Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Harington also continues his relationship with HBO after starring as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones and appearing in Industry.

When Will Harry Potter Season 2 Begin?

The first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. The first season adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Season 2, which will cover Chamber of Secrets, is expected to begin filming in autumn 2026. Harington will therefore become the face of Lockhart when the series reaches its second chapter.

For a character as flamboyant and self-important as Gilderoy Lockhart, the casting change gives the HBO series a very different screen presence than the one originally planned with Hoult. Harington’s previous audiobook performance also means the new actor already has some history with the character before cameras begin rolling.
