Kit Harington is heading to Hogwarts. HBO’s Harry Potter series has recast Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2, with Harington stepping into the role after Nicholas Hoult exited because of scheduling conflicts.
Reports of the change began appearing on August 24. TVLine says Deadline broke the news first, and TheWrap followed. PinkNews reported that the change was confirmed in a post on the series’ verified Instagram account. It all happened quickly. Hoult’s casting had been announced on August 12, only about two weeks earlier.
Why Hoult is out
According to Deadline’s reporting, as relayed by TVLine and PinkNews, a shift in HBO’s production schedule meant the studio had to work around two projects Hoult was already committed to. Once Lockhart’s scenes were moved around within the Season 2 schedule, his involvement was no longer workable. TheWrap’s version was that HBO released him from the role, citing an individual with knowledge of the situation.
None of these reports names the two projects, so the exact conflict is unclear. We’d rather say that than guess.
Harington already knows the character
Harington isn’t meeting Lockhart cold. He voiced the character in Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, which TVLine says came out in December 2025. That’s a useful warm-up for a role built on vanity and swagger. In comments reported by TheWrap, he said he is a longtime, devoted Potter fan.
Lockhart is a central figure in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book. He arrives at Hogwarts as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, a famous wizard whose reputation is far bigger than his ability. Kenneth Branagh played him in the 2002 film. Harington’s HBO history is already long: he starred in Game of Thrones and appeared in Industry, and TheWrap notes he’s slated to return for that show’s fifth and final season.
What this means for the series
The first season, adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, premieres on December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max. Season 2 was renewed in May, according to ABC Audio’s report, and will adapt Chamber of Secrets, with filming set to begin in autumn 2026. The young leads are Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron.
Lockhart only works if the actor can be charming and ridiculous in the same breath. Harington has the audiobook experience behind him, but a voice performance and a live-action one are different challenges, and we won’t know how his Lockhart plays until the second season arrives.
