Amazon isn’t finished telling the story behind One Night in Idaho: The College Murders.

Prime Video has renewed the true-crime docuseries for a second season, with the announcement first reported by Variety on June 17, 2026. Amazon later confirmed the renewal through its official About Amazon website, revealing that the new season will consist of three episodes and feature previously unavailable testimony from the law enforcement officers who investigated the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students.

The second season will not simply repeat the events covered in the original four-part series. Instead, it will shift the focus toward the investigation, the officers involved, and what happened after the case captured national attention.

Season 2 Will Explore the Investigation From the Inside

Prime Video’s official announcement confirms that Season 2 will follow the law enforcement officers who were previously unable to speak publicly because of a gag order connected to the case.

The three-episode season will include first-time access to lead detectives Brett Payne and Darren Gilbertson, Moscow Police Chief James Fry, and other members of the Moscow Police Department and Idaho State Police. The series will also use archival material, including body-camera footage, police interviews, and forensic evidence.

Rather than presenting the case only through the perspective of the victims’ families or outside commentators, the new episodes will examine the investigation through the people who were directly responsible for solving it. Prime Video says the season will explore the emotional toll on the officers, the technological breakthroughs that helped crack the case, and the work that ultimately led to a conviction without trial.

The season will also return to the people closest to the victims and examine the aftermath following Bryan Kohberger’s plea.

Why the First Season Took a Victim-Focused Approach

One Night in Idaho: The College Murders examined the November 2022 murders of Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, and Xana Kernodle, four University of Idaho students killed in an off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho.

The first season placed significant attention on the victims, their families, friends, and the wider community rather than treating the case solely as a murder mystery. That approach was central to the documentary’s identity, with the filmmakers presenting the tragedy through the people who experienced its consequences.

Season 2 will retain that human element, but its main perspective will be different. This time, the story will be told more directly by the investigators who handled the case and were previously restricted from discussing their experiences.

Prime Video Has Confirmed Three New Episodes

The second season will consist of three episodes, according to both Prime Video’s official announcement and the reports from Variety and BroadwayWorld.

Matthew Galkin will direct the new season, while Katie A. King will serve as showrunner. Galkin, Liz Garbus, King, Dan Cogan, James Patterson, and other producers from the first season are also returning in executive producer roles.

The new episodes are expected to provide additional context about the investigation, including the decisions made by local police, the role of technology and forensic evidence, and the pressure placed on the officers as the case developed.

When Will Season 2 Premiere?

Prime Video has confirmed the renewal and episode count, but a premiere date has not yet been announced.

For now, the confirmed details are limited to the three-episode order, the expanded access to investigators, and the season’s focus on the police response and the case’s aftermath. Any claims about a release date, trailer, or additional cast members should be treated as unconfirmed until Prime Video announces them.

The second season will be executive produced by Matthew Galkin, Liz Garbus, Katie A. King, Dan Cogan, Jon Bardin, Joshua Levine, Tommy Coriale, James Patterson, Bill Robinson, and Patrick Santa.
