Minecraft’s Sequel Sounds Exactly Like Something This Franchise Would Do
For months, fans, industry sites, and even studio presentations kept referring to the follow-up simply as Minecraft 2 or A Minecraft Sequel. Now Warner Bros. and Legendary have officially revealed the movie’s actual name: A Minecraft Movie Squared. The title was announced during Minecraft Live, confirming that the franchise is leaning fully into the game’s playful blocky identity instead of choosing a more traditional sequel name.
The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027, less than three years after the original movie exploded into one of the biggest video game adaptations ever made.
Why Warner Bros. Was Never Going To Stop At One Minecraft Movie
The sequel announcement isn’t surprising when you look at what happened with A Minecraft Movie. The first film became a massive box office success, pushing close to the billion-dollar mark worldwide and turning what many expected to be a risky adaptation into one of the biggest gaming movies released. Its success created the same kind of franchise momentum that studios chase for years. Once audiences embraced the strange combination of Minecraft’s sandbox creativity and the movie’s chaotic comedy, a sequel became almost inevitable.
What’s interesting is how quickly Warner Bros. moved. Reports about sequel discussions started appearing shortly after the first movie’s theatrical success, and by late 2025 the studio had already locked in a 2027 release window.
Jared Hess Is Returning, And So Is Most Of The Main Cast
One of the biggest concerns fans had was whether the creative team would change. That doesn’t appear to be happening. Director Jared Hess is returning to direct the sequel while also continuing screenplay duties alongside writer Chris Galletta.
Returning cast members are expected to include: Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks. The biggest new addition is Kirsten Dunst, who will reportedly play Alex, one of Minecraft’s most recognizable characters. Her casting became a major talking point earlier this year after she openly joked about wanting to join a movie franchise that actually makes money.
What We Actually Know About The Story
Warner Bros. is keeping plot details locked away for now.
However, cast comments and production teases suggest the sequel will go deeper into unexplored parts of the Minecraft universe, introducing new biomes, creatures, and locations beyond what audiences saw in the first movie. Several reports also indicate that production is underway in New Zealand with major visual effects work once again being handled through Weta involvement.
The Real Challenge Isn’t The Title
The challenge is topping the cultural weirdness of the first movie. The original became one of those rare internet-era blockbusters that escaped normal movie discussion and turned into a genuine online event. Memes, audience reactions, TikTok clips, gaming nostalgia, and “Chicken Jockey” chaos helped push the movie beyond normal family-film territory.
A title reveal doesn’t guarantee lightning strikes twice. The first movie succeeded because it treated Minecraft less like a traditional game adaptation and more like a giant toy box where almost anything could happen. But if A Minecraft Movie Squared can deliver the same unpredictable energy while expanding the game’s world, Warner Bros. might end up with something every studio wants right now which is a genuine video game movie franchise instead of a single successful adaptation.
