Minecraft’s Sequel Sounds Exactly Like Something This Franchise Would Do

For months, fans, industry sites, and studio presentations referred to the follow-up simply as Minecraft 2 or A Minecraft Sequel. Now Warner Bros. and Legendary have revealed the movie’s actual name: A Minecraft Movie Squared.

The title was announced during Minecraft Live on May 30, 2026, where Mojang and Warner Bros. also confirmed returning cast members, introduced Kirsten Dunst as Alex, and revealed that the sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027. The official Minecraft presentation featured Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Dunst, and Matt Berry.

The name is deliberately playful. It sounds like a conventional sequel title while also leaning into Minecraft’s block-based identity. After the first movie’s unexpected commercial success, Warner Bros. clearly has no interest in making the follow-up feel overly serious or disconnected from the game’s strange sense of humor.

Why Warner Bros. Was Never Going To Stop At One Minecraft Movie

The sequel announcement is hardly surprising when you look at what happened with A Minecraft Movie. The first film became a major box office success, earning approximately $960 million worldwide and turning what many expected to be a risky video game adaptation into one of the biggest releases of 2025.

Its success created the kind of franchise momentum studios usually spend years trying to build. Once audiences embraced the combination of Minecraft’s sandbox creativity and the movie’s chaotic comedy, another installment became an obvious possibility.

The timeline is now clearer. Variety reported on October 9, 2025, that a sequel was in development with Jared Hess returning to direct and a July 23, 2027 release date already set. Deadline reported the same day that Hess would return, with Chris Galletta also involved in the screenplay.

That means the sequel was not suddenly created by the title reveal. The May 2026 event simply gave the project its official identity and confirmed more of the cast.

Jared Hess Is Returning With A Familiar Cast

One of the biggest concerns surrounding the sequel was whether the creative team would change. That does not appear to be happening.

Jared Hess is returning as director, with Chris Galletta involved in the screenplay. Variety’s May 30, 2026 report confirmed that Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge are returning, while Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast as Alex.

Dunst’s casting was first reported by Deadline on March 19, 2026. The report identified her character as Alex, one of Minecraft’s best-known player avatars and the counterpart to Steve, played by Jack Black in the first film.

The Minecraft Live presentation later made the casting official. It also confirmed Matt Berry’s involvement in the sequel, although his exact role remains undisclosed.

Alex’s arrival is a meaningful addition because the first movie was heavily centered on Steve. Bringing in one of the game’s most recognizable characters gives the sequel an opportunity to expand the world while still keeping the original cast at its center.

Production Is Underway In New Zealand

Unlike the earlier sequel rumors, the production update now has a more concrete basis.

Production List lists A Minecraft Movie Squared as currently in production, with filming scheduled in Auckland and other locations in New Zealand. Its listing, updated June 15, 2026, identifies Jared Hess as director and confirms that principal photography was underway by May.

The original A Minecraft Movie was also filmed in New Zealand, where local crews, purpose-built sets, visual effects, and post-production helped create its blocky cinematic world. The New Zealand Film Commission confirmed that the first film was shot entirely in Aotearoa New Zealand, with more than 85% of its crew based there.

That makes New Zealand a logical return location for the sequel. However, the available production information does not establish the full scale of the new film’s visual-effects work or confirm every location and creature that will appear.

What We Actually Know About The Story

Warner Bros. and Mojang are still keeping the full plot under wraps.

The official title reveal and early promotional material suggest that Steve, Alex, and the returning characters will head back into the Overworld for another adventure. A promotional first-look video teased new environments and a larger Minecraft setting, but it did not provide a detailed plot synopsis.

The sequel is expected to explore more of the game’s biomes, creatures, and locations, but those elements should be treated as reasonable expectations rather than confirmed story details. No official announcement has yet explained the central conflict, the villain, or how Alex will be introduced into the existing group.

That secrecy is understandable. The first movie benefited from the surprise of seeing familiar Minecraft mechanics translated into a live-action comedy. Revealing too much too early could make the sequel feel more predictable than it needs to be.

The Real Challenge Isn’t The Title

The real challenge is topping the cultural weirdness of the first movie.

A Minecraft Movie became one of those rare internet-era blockbusters that escaped normal movie discussion and turned into a genuine online event. Memes, audience reactions, TikTok clips, gaming nostalgia, and the “Chicken Jockey” phenomenon helped push the film beyond the usual family-adventure audience.

A title reveal does not guarantee that lightning will strike twice. The first movie worked because it treated Minecraft less like a traditional game adaptation and more like a giant toy box where almost anything could happen.

A Minecraft Movie Squared has the advantage of a returning director, a familiar cast, a newly introduced Alex, and a world that can expand almost indefinitely. If the sequel keeps the same unpredictable energy while giving audiences more of Minecraft’s strange and colorful universe, Warner Bros. could have something more valuable than another successful adaptation: a genuine video game movie franchise.
