Some Marvel reunions feel inevitable. Thor and Loki feels overdue.
With Tom Hiddleston officially returning for Avengers: Doomsday, fans are once again wondering what happens to the God of Stories after the emotional ending of Loki Season 2. And honestly, the bigger question may not be whether Loki survives the movie. It’s whether Doctor Doom comes for him first.
Loki Has Become The Most Important Target In The Multiverse
At the end of Loki Season 2, Loki didn’t become a king. He became something much stranger. The former God of Mischief sacrificed everything to sit alone at the End of Time, holding together every timeline in existence. He’s effectively the living power source keeping the multiverse alive. Which creates a massive problem heading into Avengers: Doomsday.
Doctor Doom isn’t expected to simply threaten Earth. He’s expected to threaten reality itself. If that’s true, Loki immediately becomes one of the most valuable beings in the MCU. His throne, his temporal power, and his connection to the multiverse could all become targets.
That’s why many fans believe Doom may attack Loki early in the story or force him off the throne entirely. It would be surprising if Doom ignored him.
Marvel Has Been Quietly Building Toward A Thor Reunion
The emotional side of the story may be even more important. Thor has no idea what happened to Loki. As far as Thor knows, his brother died years ago during Avengers: Infinity War. Meanwhile, Loki has experienced centuries of growth, sacrifice, and isolation beyond the timeline itself. That’s what makes a reunion so fascinating.
It isn’t just two brothers meeting again. It’s one brother discovering that the other gave up everything to save reality while nobody was there to witness it. Even Tom Hiddleston has spoken positively about the idea of exploring a future Thor-Loki reunion, something fans have wanted ever since the Disney+ series ended. And Marvel would be crazy not to use that emotional payoff.
Could Loki Actually Die?
It’s possible.
This is a multiverse movie featuring Doctor Doom after all. But it doesn’t feel likely. Marvel spent two seasons transforming Loki from a selfish trickster into one of the franchise’s most important characters. Permanently killing him immediately after that transformation would undermine much of what made the ending of Loki Season 2 work.
Several fan theories instead point toward a different possibility.
Loki survives.
But he loses his position. Maybe Doom destabilizes the timelines. Maybe the throne is destroyed. Maybe Loki is forced to abandon his role as the God of Stories in order to save reality. That feels much more in line with where the MCU is currently heading.
The Most Likely Outcome
If there’s one prediction that keeps appearing across Marvel fandom discussions, it’s this:
Loki begins the movie on the multiversal throne. Doctor Doom attacks the structure holding reality together. Loki loses control of the timelines or is forced away from the throne.Thor finally learns what his brother became. And Loki’s story continues into Avengers: Secret Wars.
Because right now, Loki feels less like a character Marvel is preparing to remove and more like the multiverse’s living heartbeat. And if Doom wants to rewrite reality, that’s exactly where he’d start.
