Update — October 12, 2026: Spider-Man: Brand New Day has moved far beyond its record-breaking debut. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned approximately $2.51 billion worldwide, including around $955 million in the U.S. and Canada. Its opening weekend remains a major milestone: the film started with $360 million domestically, surpassing Avengers: Endgame’s 2019 record. The figures below distinguish that original opening from the film’s later box-office performance.
Spider-Man Beat Endgame With a Stronger Sunday
When Sony Pictures released its revised figures on August 3, Spider-Man: Brand New Day had officially claimed the biggest domestic opening weekend in box-office history. The film earned approximately $360 million in the United States and Canada, edging past Avengers: Endgame, which opened to about $357 million in 2019. The final figure was higher than the $355 million estimate Sony had shared on Sunday.
The difference between the two films was relatively small, but the way the record changed hands made the result interesting. Brand New Day appeared likely to fall just short before its stronger-than-expected Sunday pushed it ahead. A few million dollars separated the new record holder from one of the most famous opening weekends in modern cinema.
According to the Associated Press report published by The Washington Post, the film played in 4,487 theaters during its opening weekend. Endgame had opened in 4,662 theaters. That means Spider-Man set the record across fewer locations, although theater counts alone cannot tell us how many seats were available, how many screenings each location offered or how ticket prices affected the final totals.
The Fewer-Theaters Comparison Makes the Record More Interesting
The difference in theater counts gives the opening a useful angle beyond the headline number. Brand New Day did not need the same number of locations as Endgame to move past its domestic debut. That suggests an exceptionally strong launch across its theatrical footprint, although a precise per-theater comparison would require matching data on screenings, seating capacity and ticket sales.
There is another detail worth keeping in mind: box-office records measure money, not the number of people who watched a movie. Ticket prices have changed since 2019, and premium formats can generate more revenue per ticket. Without adjusting for inflation and comparing admissions, it would be misleading to say that Spider-Man attracted a larger audience than Endgame simply because it earned more dollars over its opening weekend.
That does not make the achievement meaningless. Opening above $360 million is extraordinary in any recent theatrical market, and the film became only the second movie to cross $300 million domestically in a single opening weekend. But the fairest reading is that Brand New Day broke the revenue record, not necessarily the attendance record.
Preview Sales and Opening Day Set the Tone
The record-breaking weekend began before Friday. Brand New Day reportedly earned $72 million from Thursday previews, topping Endgame’s $60 million preview figure. Its Friday opening-day total reached approximately $169.3 million, including presales, according to Gulf News’ box-office report.
Those numbers show how much demand had built up before the final weekend total was confirmed. The previews provided a strong start, Friday carried that momentum forward, and Sunday supplied the extra revenue needed to overtake Endgame.
For Sony and Marvel, the sequence was especially valuable because the record was not secured by a comfortable early lead. It became a story that developed over the weekend, with the final reported figure changing the result after initial projections suggested Spider-Man would finish second.
The Global Opening Was Huge, but Endgame’s Debut Was Larger
The domestic record was only one part of the film’s launch. Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected approximately $932 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including $572 million from international markets. China contributed about $121 million to that initial global total.
Even with that enormous debut, the movie did not beat Avengers: Endgame worldwide. The Avengers film opened to approximately $1.22 billion globally, leaving it comfortably ahead of Spider-Man’s first-weekend total.
China’s contribution was a particularly notable part of the launch. It demonstrated that the film’s opening was not driven solely by North American audiences. However, one weekend cannot establish how consistently a superhero movie will perform in China or other international markets over its full theatrical run.
The worldwide opening and the later cumulative gross also answer different questions. The opening total measures the initial burst of audience demand; the final total reflects how well a movie continues attracting people after the first rush of fans has passed.
What the Record Means for Marvel
The film’s debut was a major result for Sony and Marvel, but the most useful takeaway is not simply that Spider-Man beat the Avengers. It is that the character remained capable of drawing an enormous theatrical audience after Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened domestically to around $260 million in December 2021.
The jump from that earlier debut to Brand New Day’s $360 million opening is striking. Still, it should not be treated as proof that every upcoming Marvel release will perform similarly. Spider-Man has a distinct audience, a long-standing fan base and a different place in popular culture from an ensemble film such as Avengers: Endgame.
My view is that the opening record matters most as evidence of how much demand can gather around a major theatrical event. The fewer-theaters comparison adds context, while the inflation caveat keeps the achievement in perspective. Spider-Man won the domestic opening-weekend revenue record; Endgame retained the larger worldwide opening. Both facts can be true at the same time.
Disclaimer
Box-office figures can change as distributors and reporting services revise their totals. Opening-weekend revenue is different from a film’s cumulative theatrical gross, and nominal ticket revenue does not account for inflation or attendance.
