Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially taken the biggest domestic opening weekend in box-office history, beating the record set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
The Tom Holland-led Marvel movie finished its first weekend with $360 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to revised figures released by Sony Pictures on August 3. That pushed it past Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $357.1 million in 2019.
The result is particularly notable because early estimates had Brand New Day finishing just below the record. Sunday ticket sales were stronger than expected, allowing the film to cross the line and claim the top spot.
Spider-Man Needed One More Push to Beat Endgame
The first numbers suggested that Brand New Day would come extremely close to Endgame but might fall short.
The film was initially projected to make around $355 million domestically, leaving it roughly $2 million behind Endgame. After the final Sunday numbers came in, however, the total climbed to $360 million.
That gives Brand New Day a new record by roughly $2.9 million.
The movie also had a remarkably strong start before the weekend was even over. Its $72 million in Thursday previews surpassed Endgame’s $60 million preview record, while its opening-day haul reached roughly $168 million, also ahead of the previous benchmark.
The domestic result makes Brand New Day only the second movie ever to open above $300 million in the U.S. and Canada, following Avengers: Endgame.
The Global Opening Was Huge, But Endgame Still Leads
The domestic record wasn’t the only major number attached to the release.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected an estimated $932 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including approximately $572 million from international markets. China alone contributed about $121 million.
That places the movie at No. 2 for the biggest global opening weekend, behind Avengers: Endgame, which launched with approximately $1.22 billion worldwide.
So while Spider-Man has taken Endgame’s domestic record, the worldwide crown remains with the Avengers.
The distinction is important. Brand New Day has achieved the biggest opening in the North American market, but it still has another level to reach if it wants to match Marvel’s overall global debut record.
A Major Win for Spider-Man and Marvel
The $360 million launch also gives Tom Holland’s Spider-Man a huge jump over the previous record for the character.
Before Brand New Day, the biggest domestic opening for Holland’s Spider-Man was Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to around $260 million in December 2021. Brand New Day has now surpassed that figure by approximately $100 million in its first weekend alone.
The performance arrives during a particularly strong period for the theatrical market. The Odyssey, which also features Holland and Zendaya, earned another $51 million during the same weekend. Together, the two films helped produce the biggest overall domestic box-office weekend on record.
For Sony and Marvel, the result is a straightforward commercial victory: $360 million domestically, $932 million worldwide, and a new all-time North American opening-weekend record.
