After more than 16 years of surviving walkers, losing friends, and becoming one of television’s most recognizable characters, Norman Reedus has officially wrapped filming on the final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
The actor marked the production wrap with an emotional Instagram post shared on June 17, 2026, shortly after returning from Mongolia and looking through behind-the-scenes photographs from the final episode. UPI, TheWrap, and Entertainment Weekly all reported on the message, which Reedus used to reflect on the final season and the people who made it possible.
Reedus wrote:
“Finally going through these photos to check off from the last episode now that I’m back from Mongolia it was really hard to kill any of them. I didn’t post any of those here, but I can’t wait for people to see this show.”
He continued by praising the production team:
“The crew [was] the best I’ve ever worked with. The feeling of accomplishment when it was over was just amazing. Such hard work and so much heart into this, I think you’re gonna feel it. It was a special season. I can’t wait for you to see it. It hits just way different this time.”
The post included behind-the-scenes images from the final season, including photographs of Reedus with Melissa McBride. The fourth season is expected to be the final chapter of the Daryl Dixon spinoff, although AMC has not yet announced its premiere date.
Daryl Was Never Supposed To Be The Main Character
That is what makes Daryl’s story so unusual.
Unlike Rick Grimes, Michonne, Carol, or many of the franchise’s other major figures, Daryl Dixon did not come from Robert Kirkman’s comics. He was created specifically for AMC’s television adaptation, with Norman Reedus bringing the character to life in 2010.
Daryl was not introduced as the leader of the group or as a conventional hero. He was a difficult, aggressive survivor whose emotional walls slowly began to come down.
Over time, however, he became one of the most important characters in the entire franchise.
Few television characters have experienced a rise quite like Daryl’s. A role that could easily have remained a supporting part became the center of one of the biggest post-apocalyptic television universes ever created.

That makes the post meaningful without requiring it to be treated as a definitive farewell to the character forever.
Why This Ending Feels Bigger Than a Spinoff
The Walking Dead universe is not disappearing. AMC still has projects connected to the franchise, including Dead City and other continuing stories.
Daryl’s ending feels different because of how long he has been part of the series.
Rick Grimes helped establish The Walking Dead as a television phenomenon. Daryl helped carry it through major cast changes, shifting storylines, and some of its most difficult years.
Whenever the franchise lost another familiar face, Daryl remained one of the characters viewers could rely on. His journey from isolated outsider to emotional anchor became one of the show’s most enduring stories.
That is why the end of Daryl Dixon carries more weight than the cancellation or conclusion of an ordinary spinoff.
What the Final Season Could Mean for Daryl
The final season’s story remains largely under wraps. Season 3 ended with Daryl and Carol facing an uncertain future after an explosion at sea, leaving their next move unclear.
