Marvel Studios has given Avengers: Doomsday fans another mystery to obsess over — and this time, the studio didn’t need a trailer or casting announcement to do it.
During San Diego Comic-Con’s preview night on July 22, 2026, a mysterious costume labeled “Latverian Witch” appeared at Marvel Studios’ booth alongside other Avengers: Doomsday costumes and a Sentinel head. ComicBook.com’s Matthew Aguilar, who attended the booth, photographed the display and reported that the costume had not previously been seen.
Marvel has not identified the person wearing the costume. That missing piece is exactly why the reveal has turned into a fan-theory rabbit hole, with Scarlet Witch and Cynthia von Doom among the most discussed possibilities.
And, importantly, neither theory has been confirmed by Marvel.
Marvel’s Latverian Witch Reveal Was A Costume, Not A Character Announcement
The first thing worth clearing up is what Marvel actually revealed.
The studio did not announce a new Avengers: Doomsday character by name. Instead, attendees discovered a production costume displayed at the Marvel booth with the label “Latverian Witch.” The outfit featured a hooded green robe, metallic details and a silver mask that concealed the wearer’s face. ComicBook.com’s on-site report noted that the design clearly evokes Doctor Doom’s visual style.
The same booth also displayed costumes for characters including Thor, Cyclops, Gambit, Captain America, Yelena Belova and Sue Storm, as well as a Sentinel head.
That combination immediately made the display more interesting than a random piece of background world-building. Marvel was putting a mysterious magical figure and one of the X-Men’s most recognizable pieces of technology in the same Doomsday exhibit.
The Scarlet Witch Theory Has An Obvious Appeal
One of the first theories to spread was that the Latverian Witch could somehow be connected to Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch.
The idea is still just speculation, but the costume’s magical appearance makes the comparison easy to understand. Wanda remains one of the MCU’s most important magic users, and her apparent death at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has kept fans debating whether Marvel will eventually bring her back.
ComicBook.com noted that some fans were specifically theorizing that the figure could be an alternate-universe version of Scarlet Witch working alongside Doom.
There is also a simple storytelling reason the theory refuses to disappear: putting a version of Wanda on Doctor Doom’s side would instantly give Avengers: Doomsday another major emotional conflict without requiring Marvel to explain why the original Wanda suddenly abandoned everything she had been doing.
But there is a problem with the theory.
Marvel has never said this character is Wanda, and the costume itself isn’t enough evidence to establish that connection.
Cynthia von Doom May Actually Fit The Label Better
Another theory has a much stronger connection to the words Marvel actually used: Cynthia von Doom, Victor von Doom’s mother.
In Marvel Comics, Cynthia is a powerful witch whose history is deeply connected to Victor’s childhood and his obsession with supernatural forces. Her soul becoming trapped by Mephisto is an important part of Doom’s comic-book mythology.
That makes the name “Latverian Witch” particularly interesting.
ComicBook.com’s later analysis of the Comic-Con display pointed toward Cynthia as a possible explanation, especially after the costume was eventually displayed alongside Doctor Doom. The outlet noted that Cynthia’s comic history gives her a direct connection to both Latveria and witchcraft.
If Marvel is using the costume to introduce Doom’s family history rather than secretly bringing back Wanda, the reveal could have considerably more to do with Victor’s personal story than with the Avengers’ roster.
That’s also why this theory shouldn’t be dismissed simply because it is less flashy than a Scarlet Witch return.
The Costume Changed During Comic-Con
The mystery became even stranger as the convention continued.
Marvel’s display didn’t remain completely static. Different versions of the Latverian Witch costume appeared during the event, including green, orange and purple variations. ComicBook.com’s reporting documented the changes, while other outlets and convention attendees shared photos of the different displays online.
That naturally sent the speculation machine into overdrive.
The purple version encouraged comparisons with characters such as Clea, while the orange design was enough for some fans to reconnect the mystery to Scarlet Witch. Other theories have included Agatha Harkness, Sylvie and other magical MCU characters.
None of those identifications has been confirmed.
In fact, the changing costumes may ultimately mean something much simpler: Marvel could be teasing a group of Latverian witches rather than hiding one specific famous character beneath the mask.
The Sentinel Reveal Is A Separate Clue Worth Watching
The Latverian Witch wasn’t the only Doomsday surprise at the booth.
Marvel also displayed a Sentinel head, giving fans their first official look at the mutant-hunting machines being brought into the MCU’s Avengers storyline. ComicBook.com described the design as strongly reminiscent of the classic Sentinels from the comics and X-Men ’97.
That matters because Avengers: Doomsday already has an unusually large collection of mutant characters attached to it, including Cyclops and Gambit, alongside established MCU heroes.
The Sentinel doesn’t prove anything about the Latverian Witch’s identity, but seeing both pieces in the same Marvel exhibition underlines just how many different corners of the MCU are being pulled into Doom’s story.
For Now, The Mask Stays On
The most useful way to approach the Latverian Witch theories is to separate what Marvel has actually shown from what fans want the costume to mean.

Not confirmed: the character’s real name, the actor wearing the costume, whether the figure is one person or part of a larger group, and whether she has any connection to Wanda, Cynthia von Doom, Clea or another established Marvel character.
That uncertainty is doing a lot of work for Marvel right now. A single masked costume has generated weeks of discussion without the studio having to reveal the actual character.
Until Marvel decides to pull the mask off, Cynthia von Doom and Scarlet Witch remain theories — not spoilers, casting confirmations or established plot details.
